Regular dental visits are essential for maintaining your child's oral health and catching potential issues early. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit a pediatric dentist every six months, starting from the age of one or within six months of the first tooth erupting. These biannual check-ups allow the dentist to monitor your child's dental development, provide professional cleanings, and offer guidance on proper oral hygiene practices.
During these visits, Dr. Su Kim at Tiny Tooth Pediatric Dentistry in Columbia, MD, will not only examine your child's teeth and gums but also educate you and your child on brushing and flossing techniques. Regular visits help in building a positive relationship between your child and their dentist, making dental visits a routine and stress-free part of their healthcare.
Choosing a pediatric dentist like Dr. Su Kim at Tiny Tooth Pediatric Dentistry in Columbia, MD, offers several advantages over visiting a general dentist. Pediatric dentists undergo specialized training to address the unique dental needs of children, from infancy through adolescence. This training includes child psychology, growth and development, and behavior management, ensuring your child receives care tailored to their age and developmental stage.
Pediatric dental offices are also designed with children in mind, featuring a welcoming and child-friendly environment that helps reduce anxiety and makes dental visits more enjoyable. The team at Tiny Tooth Pediatric Dentistry is skilled in communicating with children, ensuring they feel comfortable and understood during their appointments. By choosing a pediatric dentist, you're providing your child with a foundation of positive dental experiences that can lead to a lifetime of good oral health.
Dental emergencies can be distressing for both you and your child, but knowing how to respond can make all the difference. If your child experiences a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or a broken tooth, it's important to act quickly. First, remain calm and reassure your child. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, gently rinse it with water, avoiding touching the root, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that's not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva and contact Dr. Su Kim at Tiny Tooth Pediatric Dentistry immediately at (443) 832-6111.
For severe toothaches, rinse your child's mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek if there's swelling. Avoid using aspirin or other painkillers directly on the gums, as this can cause tissue damage. In any dental emergency, it's crucial to seek prompt professional care to prevent further complications and ensure your child's oral health is protected.
It's not uncommon for children to feel anxious about visiting the dentist. However, there are several strategies you can employ to help ease their fears. Start by discussing dental visits positively at home, explaining what to expect in simple, reassuring terms. Reading children's books about going to the dentist or role-playing a dental visit at home can also help familiarize your child with the process and reduce anxiety.
At Tiny Tooth Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Su Kim and her team are experienced in working with children who have dental anxiety. They use gentle, child-friendly communication to explain procedures and make your child feel at ease. The office environment is designed to be inviting and fun, with toys, games, and colorful decor that distract and entertain young patients.
Additionally, consider scheduling a "meet and greet" appointment before any treatment is needed. This allows your child to visit the office, meet the staff, and become comfortable with the surroundings without the pressure of an examination. By taking these steps, you can help your child develop a positive attitude towards dental care, ensuring they maintain good oral health habits throughout their life.
Dr. Kim, her staff and her office is amazing, very professional and personable. Dr. Kim did a lip and tongue tie release on my almost 2 year old which I am very pleased with. Dr. Kim talked out the entire procedure with me before and during, worked quick as my little one got squirmy but gave him little breaks when needed. The release has helped my son already in so many ways and it hasn’t even been a week yet. If you are questioning if a release is the right choice, I highly recommend it. Moments after his tongue tie release he was able to stick his tongue out further and fully lick the popsicle Dr. Kim provided. He’s using sounds and forming words we never heard from him before! All around an amazing experience thanks to Dr. Kim and her staff!
